new digs

"The real secret of re-reading is simply this: It is impossible. The characters remain the same, and the words never change, but the reader always does. Pip is always there to be revisited, but you, the reader, are a little like the convict who surprises him in the graveyard — always a stranger.

I look at the books on my library shelves. They certainly seem dormant. But what if the characters are quietly rearranging themselves? What if Emma Woodhouse doesn’t learn from her mistakes? What if Tom Jones descends into a sodden life of poaching and outlawry? What if Eve resists Satan, remembering God’s injunction and Adam’s loving advice? I imagine all the characters bustling to get back into their places as they feel me taking the book down from the shelf. “Hurry,” they say, “he’ll expect to find us exactly where he left us, never mind how much his life has changed in the meantime."

exceptions to the rule

Most of you know how anxious wayward balloons make me (along with kites and umbrellas on a windy day). Holding a balloon will pretty much put me in a panicked state of hyperventilated breathing and white knuckles from gripping the string so tightly. Still, I really love this unofficial Grizzly Bear video for their song "Two Weeks," which uses clips from The Red Balloon. Perhaps it's because the balloons float with purpose, often hovering patiently near to the ground instead of tugging at clenched fists, trying to escape into the weightless distance. via S F-J

greenpoint ave and leonard street, brooklyn, ny

we have a perfect yellow kitchen. we have a dark, green-blue wall the color of shaded spruce in our living room. we have a bathroom that has mint chocolate chip-green tiles. we have six windows and hardwood floors and high ceilings and painted, space-age-silver pipes. we have real tables and real chairs. we have a buzzer by the mailboxes downstairs which, when pressed, alerts us via a sound in our apartment. we have a button by our door which, when pressed, makes another sound and opens the door downstairs. we have a fire escape-balcony that looks out into a leafy courtyard. we have a fern. our oven is small but we have an appropriate sized baking tray. we have two non-functioning fire places. the screens on our windows slide upwards, making it easy for us to stick our heads outside and call to you as you walk up the street to our door. just ring the buzzer and we will let you in.
